dutch resistance – EMMY VAN TAACK At the age of 14, Emmy Van Taack became a member of the Dutch Resistance during WWII. She was captured four years later and imprisoned. She fell ill with scarlet fever and when sent to a hospital, managed to escape and went into hiding until the day she saw her country liberated by Canadians in 1945. Emmy continues to give presentations at military organizations and schools about her harrowing and courageous experiences during the war and every year, returns home to Holland for remembrance services. Since the early 70’s, Emmy has also been a volunteer at the Women’s College Hospital. She still owns a cottage on Lake Simcoe where she enjoys swimming and her gardens. Since moving here in 2010, Emmy is one of our most active and highly involved un-retired residents, who never tires of enjoying life to the fullest.

SPACE MAN – Doug Caswell His dream was to fly to Mars. While he hasn’t quite made it there, Doug has gone where few men have gone before. Armed with a Masters from the Institute for Aerospace Science Toronto, he has worked for SPAR Aerospace, the Canadian Space Agency (where he designed the first Mobile Communications Satellite and was a Test Manager on the Canada Arm for the Space Shuttle among many other amazing things) and the European Space Agency. Incredibly, he now has his own energy business with the dream to solve our energy crisis by producing energy from High Altitude Kites called Kytoons. His hobbies include spending time with his two daughters, astronomy, golf and skiing. How does he like it here? “I am very happy to be in the wonderful Dunfield and be un-retired!”

VETERAN VOLUNTEERS – Marny & Roy Loach If you’re wondering where Roy and wife Marny Loach are, more than likely they are doing what they love doing – volunteering. Roy earned a mechanical engineering degree and had his own engineering firm, however over the years he earned another designation: Toy Doctor. He turned his skills to fixing, designing and building instructive toys for kids at Bloorview Kids Rehab and has been featured on CTV, Global and CBC. He also volunteers at Sunnybrook Odette Cancer Centre. Marny was a registered nurse at St. Michael’s Hospital, an elementary teacher and a communication teacher to the disabled at Bloorview MacMillan Centre. She shares Roy’s love of volunteering, and continues to be supportive of many other healthcare facilities. They have both been volunteering at Toronto’s Ronald McDonald House since 1997 and have each received Ontario Volunteer Service Awards. Thankfully, they also save some time for themselves to enjoy their home at The Dunfield.

TRAVEL We’re always offering our residents original and interesting adventures to enjoy. Here are just a few of our recent un-retiring adventures. We’ve organized a thrilling Helicopter Ride around Downtown Toronto giving our residents a bird’s eye view of the CN Tower & other major sites. Some of our residents got up early and joined us on a Hot Air Balloon ride in Kitchener, where they were able to watch the sunrise from 3000 ft. We’ve been on a fishing trip in Port Credit. And while we couldn’t get to Cuba, we did host a Cuban Theme Day – where residents learned about the culture, music and history of Cuba, and were treated to a Theme dinner in Classic Dining Room with 2 salsa dancers performing.

FASHION Luminato: Sargasso exhibit by Philip Beesley “Philip Beesley takes the relationship of materials to buildings to the point that the installation appears a part of the environment in which it rests.” A visionary architectural pioneer creates a responsive landscape to infuse one of downtown’s busiest spaces with astonishing new life. Watch architecture come to LIFE!

THEATRE As part of our Creative Movie Making series, Rosie Chakardan worked with our residents on a feature film called 59 minutes - a 20 minute spoof on the popular TV show 60 minutes. Rosie hosted a premier night for the rest of the residents that did not participate in the film. It was a gala event and a huge hit with the residents.

Now isn’t time we have our own codes?

LMDO - Laughing My Dentures Off
BTW - Bring The Wheelchair
WTP - Where’s The Prunes

Now next time you want to go out for a great dining experience – you can do so right in your very own residence. For those who enjoy life, exquisitely delicious and healthy food and an active, independent lifestyle, Bon Appetit.
